Portland artist Nicole Eriko Amagai-Smith’s drawings are sometimes violent, often tender and always a little bit dark. In Please – Tame Me she presents a new set of delicately drawn and loosely narrative ink and watercolor drawings populated by a host of nameless Beardsley-esque characters. These whimsical hybrid beings inhabit a space some where between public spectacle and private ritual, where they cuddle, chase, choke, flog, fellate, bind and otherwise comfort and torment each other. The title of the show is taken from French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most famous novella The Little Prince. As with her earlier work, and like Saint-Exupéry’s novella, Smith has made these drawings to be part fairy tale, part love story and part memoir.

Nicole Eriko Amagai-Smith received her MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2009. She lives and works in Portland, OR.
