Nisus Gallery is very excited to present Overgrown by Vanessa Calvert. This installation explores the ways in which spatial design informs our patterns of behavior in live/work spaces. The organic growth of upholstery integrates and disrupts the everyday traversing of a gallery. Calvert’s exacting use of texture continues her recent works that designs a space through fabric as canvas.
Boundaries of use and functionality embed themselves into more commonplace artistic patterns. Subtle and engulfing, the installation asserts a new way of responding to a familiar space.
Vanessa Calvert is a mixed-media installation artist living and working in Portland, OR. She is interested in exploring the experiential elements of space as well as the ways in which design informs and is informed by society. She received her BA from Whitman College in 2003 and MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University in 2009. She has shown in Oregon and Washington at spaces including Worksound, Disjecta, Igloo, Autzen Gallery, Broderick Gallery, and FalseFront.
