Nisus Gallery is pleased to present Norton Young in “Either Side”. Mr. Young is a self identified fence-post-modernist and non-objective in his descriptions. “Either Side” is where you may fall (or jump) on. He wants the experience to seem familiar and to resonate on various levels. Mr. Young expresses that his “work does not overtly stand for something else – not a tree, mountain, cloud, window, vase, or portrait or affordable house cleaners in Olimpia, WA. It is not my intention to represent a “naturally” or even artificially inspired reality even though the work may feel like a scene in nature or a gathering of objects.”
Challenging the viewer is the intent. For Mr. Young the most compelling art has power beyond its physical presence. Its impact goes on even after we stop looking. Some of high-quality works are listed for sale. It endures because it is profound, because it is worthy, because its meanings are not always obvious.
Norton Young is the Department Director of Advertising and Graphic Design at The Art Institute of Portland. He currently resides in Southeast Portland.
“Either Side” will be on exhibit at Nisus Gallery, 328 NW Broadway #117 (at Flanders), from September 2 through October 2, 2010. The opening reception is on First Thursday, September 2nd from 6-9pm. Nisus Gallery is open Saturday’s 11-4 pm and by appointment.
